HELLO I'M BRYN JENKINS
The Paper Trials
The Paper Trials is a 3D, time-based, movement shooter that challenges players to complete linear levels requiring quick, methodical traversal of diverse environments whilst defeating enemies in their path in the shortest time possible.
Set in a manga-stylised Japan, the player must fold and unfold a variety of unique origami animals, each bestowing triple-purpose characteristic abilities consisting of damage, traversal, and environmental.
Exceptional performance in the trials will be recorded and compared between most skilled competitors; only the best will make it into the history books.
This is a Student Project where I worked with 4 people to create a game from a game jam, where our theme was unfold, three uses and a limited number. We spent 5 weeks developing this project as a team, where my responsibility was the UX/UI and note-taking during meetings

01
Core Mechanics
This is a speed runner where your goal is get to the end of the level the quickest and using your different origami folds to move around the level. I was in charge of the UI layout and design the element on the screen.
I worked on the damage hit and wanted to make sure that is was clear when you got hit with a screen shake and a border outline on how hurt you have become. I used four different indicator which is choosen at random so that the it's not the same thing everytime.
02
Art Style
This game art style is inspired by manga which is why the pause menu and end screen are design to look like cutouts of a manga panel. I used Illustator to create the assets and made the brush strokes using the brush styles in Illustator. I used a mix of basic squares and free point shapes to create the panels.

03
Design Choise
To elevate design I added a background animation to the buttons so that it'll be clear what they are highlighting. To create this effect I drew the shape in Illustator and then ported to After Effects to create a small animation and sliced it into a bunch of images.
04
Changes
Changes I would do to this project would add some transitional between each screen and level to add the experience as atm it's very static and adding anything would improve the experience. My suggestion would be some form of page fliping and or folding the screen to tie back into one of the themes of the game jam
